Providing the complementary therapies of massage, myofascial release, Indian head
massage, reflexology and reiki in Barwell (Leicestershire) – convenient for Hinckley,
Leicester, Nuneaton, Bedworth and surrounding villages
NOTE: The treatments that I offer are complementary and should not be used as an
alternative to seeking medical advice. This is because it is vital that we do not
cause any delay to medical treatment of symptoms that could be a warning sign of
an undiagnosed medical condition.
Seek medical advice before having a massage if you have phlebitis, thrombosis, varicose
veins, severe acute back pain, or fever.

Massage has been used as a means of healing for as long as records have been kept;
in all probability it was used long before then. We instinctively rub sore or aching
areas to relieve them, and massage techniques of today have grown up around this
concept.
My training in massage has geared me up to be widely skilled in a variety of techniques,
which means that I adapt my treatment to your needs, taking account of:
your level of health and physical fitness
your build and lifestyle, and
the reasons for your tension and the events occurring in your life that need to be
taken into account.
The massage techniques I use help to ease muscle pain and stiffness resulting from
such things as sports activities and over-enthusiastic DIY and gardening. By combining
soft tissue release, deep tissue massage and other remedial massage techniques, including
myofascial release and trigger point therapy (see below for more about these therapies),
I can help to reduce tightness, stiffness, tenderness and soreness, and improve flexibility
and mobility.
When you first come to see me I will take a full case history in confidence. Then
together we will discuss and agree a plan of treatment that is adapted to your individual
needs, physical characteristics and personality. We’ll review this plan at each visit,
adjusting it if necessary: holistic massage does not follow a set routine - it works
with you rather than on you.
reducing stress by working on the calming (parasympathetic) nervous system
calming your emotions by soothing your busy mind and slowing down your thoughts.
My techniques include the following:
Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage relieves severe tension in muscle and connective tissue (also
called fascia). It is used on both the superficial and deep layers of muscles, fascia,
and other structures. Treatment sessions are often quite intense because the work
is deliberate and focused on specific, usually small, areas of the body. Clients
who come to me for deep tissue massage are in constant pain, are usually physically
active, or have sustained physical injury. Common presenting problems are stiff necks,
prolonged lower back stiffness and pain, and sore, tight shoulders and upper back.
Clients will commonly find that the pain from the muscle is replaced with a new muscle
ache for a day or two, due to the recovery starting.
Soft tissue release
Soft tissue release is a special technique that isolates areas of tension in muscles,
and isolates specific muscles within muscles groups (for example the quads).
It is particularly useful for people who are taking any exercise or sport; anyone
recovering from an injury to muscle; people who stand or sit in one position for
prolonged periods of time; and anyone who is finding that their muscles are getting
tighter and tighter.
Trigger point therapy
Trigger point therapy is a specific form of soft tissue release that works on areas
within a muscle where fibres are tight and tender to the touch. Trigger points can
be local spots of tenderness in a muscle, or can result in referred pain elsewhere.
They can also occur in fascia (also called connective tissue).
Myofascial release
Myofascial release is a special technique for stretching and releasing the connective
tissue (fascia) around muscles. Connective tissue surrounds everything in our bodies
- muscle, tendon, joint, organs. It can tighten around muscles, tendons and joints
and therefore result in pain, stiffness and poor mobility. See separate page for
more information.
